The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair is the result of work by the motor industry to create a code of practice to address concerns raised by the National Consumer Council and the government over consumer detriment caused by the sector. The Code is run and administered by Motor Codes Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT).

SMMT was tasked by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's Retail Motor Strategy Sherpa Code Working Group, which included SMMT, the Retail Motor Industry Federation, BERR, the Office of Fair Trading, vehicle manufacturers and car dealer groups, to set up, establish and run the Service and Repair Code for the motor industry.

Motor Codes Limited is responsible for the administration and operation of the Motor Industry Codes. Its immediate priorities include encouraging garages to sign up to the Code and to achieve Stage 1 code approval under the OFT Consumer Codes Approval Scheme.
